A reconstructed Qing-dynasty style shopping street along the Hai River in the old Chinese city, centered on the Tianhou Palace, a temple to the sea goddess Mazu first built in 1326. Ancient Culture Street occupies the site of Tianjin's original walled town, which grew up around the Tianhou Palace after the temple's founding in 1326 during the Yuan dynasty, making it older than the city of Tianjin itself in official founding-date terms (1404). The current street was rebuilt in the 1980s in Qing-dynasty style using traditional grey-brick and carved-wood facades, and it remains the commercial center for Tianjin's folk-art traditions, including Yangliuqing woodblock New Year prints and the hand-painted clay figurines associated with the 19th-century sculptor Zhang Mingshan (Clay Figure Zhang). The temple itself still holds an annual Mazu birthday festival procession in the third lunar month.
