The Tsingtao Brewery Old Site stands on Dengzhou Road in Shibei District, Qingdao, Shandong, China, and marks the birthplace of Tsingtao beer, one of China's best-known beer brands. The brewery was founded in 1903 by German and British settlers as the Germania Brewery, during the German lease of Jiaozhou Bay, to supply beer to the colony's residents and the German naval garrison. It used local Laoshan spring water and imported German equipment and techniques, and the brand name Tsingtao is the older romanisation of Qingdao. After the German period, the brewery passed to Japanese ownership in 1914 and later to Chinese ownership, and after 1949 it became a state-owned enterprise, now Tsingtao Brewery Company. The museum occupies the original red-brick buildings and is arranged in a route that follows the beer-making process and the company's history. Exhibits include historical photographs, old bottles, labels and advertising, brewing tools, and documents from the German era, then displays on the growth of the company. The tour goes through the old production halls, with original copper kettles and fermentation equipment, and shows brewing stages from malt and hops to bottling. Visitors then reach a modern section including a bottling line demonstration, a pouring area and a tasting bar, where fresh unpasteurised beer is served in the concluding stage. The architecture is an industrial German style, with brick walls, arched windows and simple timber roofs, and its preservation shows the origins of Qingdao's industrial heritage. The site was converted into a museum in 1991 to mark the brewery's ninetieth anniversary and has been renovated several times, and it remains a popular introduction to Qingdao's colonial history through everyday industry. The museum sits close to the beer street and is often visited together with the city's annual beer festival areas.
