Built in 1906 for the governor of the German-leased Jiaozhou Bay colony (1898-1914)
The former German Governor's Residence stands on Longshan Road in Shinan District, Qingdao, Shandong, China, on a hill above the old German Quarter. It was built between 1905 and 1906 for the governor of Jiaozhou Bay, the German-leased territory held from 1898 until Japan captured it in November 1914 at the start of the First World War. The building was designed in a German Renaissance and Art Nouveau-influenced style, using granite from the region, a steep roof and towers, and is considered one of the most impressive surviving colonial buildings in Qingdao. Its interior reflects the ambitions of the colonial administration, with a grand entrance hall, a wide staircase, a banquet hall and residential rooms. After the German period, the building housed Japanese officials and later served under the Republic of China as a residence for governors and important guests, and after 1949 it also hosted leaders of the People's Republic, including Mao Zedong, who is recorded as having stayed in it. It later opened as a museum, restored to show the colonial-era furnishings and rooms, along with exhibits on the German lease and the city's development. Visitors can see the reception halls, the study, bedrooms, the ornate staircase, and rooms restored to different periods. The visit is a short walk-through with chronological explanations of Qingdao's colonial history, the layout of the German Quarter and its architecture. The building has been repaired and maintained as a protected heritage site, with the exterior stonework and roofs intact. Its location near the Zhongshan Road and the old Protestant Church makes it easy to combine with other German-era sites, while its hillside position gives views over the red-tiled roofs of the old town toward Qingdao Bay. As a site, it illustrates how the leased territory was planned as a model colony and how its architecture shaped the later identity of the city.
