Mount Hua (Huashan)

Mount Hua rises 120km east of Xi'an near Huayin City in Weinan Prefecture, reached by a thirty-minute high-speed train from Xi'an North Railway Station to Huashan North Station, followed by a free shuttle bus to the scenic area gate. One of China's Five Great Mountains, Huashan is known for its sheer granite cliffs, exposed ridgeline trails, and the famous wooden Plank Walk in the Sky bolted to a vertical rock face near the South Peak. The mountain has five main peaks — North, West, South, East, and Central — connected by stone-cut steps and chain-assisted paths that Taoist pilgrims have climbed for centuries, with several temples still active along the route. Visitors can ride the North Peak cable car up and hike the connecting ridges to the other peaks, or take the longer Huashan cable car to the West Peak for a shorter overall hike; either way, reaching all five peaks in one day involves several hours of sustained climbing on steep stairs. Many visitors begin with a pre-dawn ascent or overnight stay near the peaks to catch sunrise from East Peak, considered the mountain's signature view, before descending by cable car in the afternoon. September through November brings the clearest skies and cooler temperatures for the exposed sections, though national holiday weeks bring heavy congestion on the narrow stairways and should be avoided. Small stalls near the cable car stations and along the ridge sell instant noodles, tea eggs, and bottled water at premium prices, while more substantial restaurants cluster around Huashan North Station and the town at the mountain's base for a meal before or after the climb.
