Hukou Waterfall (Yellow River)

Hukou Waterfall sits 350km north of Xi'an on the Yellow River, straddling the border between Yichuan County in Shaanxi and Jixian County in Shanxi. With no direct public transit connection, the trip requires a chartered car or self-drive covering roughly 4.5 to 5 hours each way, making an early morning departure from Xi'an, or a shorter run from Yan'an, essential to arrive with useful daylight. The waterfall is the second-largest on the Yellow River and the only major yellow-colored waterfall in the world, formed where the river narrows dramatically into a rock gorge and drops around 20 meters, throwing up a constant mist that catches rainbows in clear midday light. Viewing platforms exist on both the Shaanxi and Shanxi banks, connected by a bridge, and visitors typically spend one to two hours walking between viewpoints and watching the water churn through the narrows. Peak water volume runs from July through October during the summer flood season, when the falls are at their most dramatic, while December through February can bring partial ice formations along the banks and frozen spray on the rocks, a very different but equally striking sight. Because of the long drive, most day trips involve an early breakfast in Xi'an or Yan'an, a midday arrival and viewing period, and a late return; local noodle stalls near Yichuan County offer a lunch stop, though options are limited compared to city dining. Given the distance, some travelers choose to base the trip out of Yan'an instead of Xi'an to cut driving time roughly in half.
