Famen Temple & Baoji Bronzeware Museum

Famen Temple and the Baoji Bronzeware Museum lie 120km west of Xi'an, reached in about 1.5 hours by chartered car to Fufeng County, with a further hour on to Baoji city; independent travelers can also take a high-speed train to Baoji and taxi out to the temple. Famen Temple's underground crypt, sealed for over a thousand years and rediscovered in 1987, held a finger bone relic believed to belong to the Buddha along with hundreds of Tang dynasty gold, silver, and glass artifacts, many now displayed in the temple's modern museum beneath a towering new pagoda. A morning visit allows time to see the underground palace replica, the relic hall, and the surrounding temple grounds before moving on to Baoji. The Baoji Bronzeware Museum, one of China's leading collections of Western Zhou dynasty bronze vessels, showcases inscribed ritual bronzes excavated from tombs across the Guanzhong plain, offering a different angle on ancient Shaanxi's role as a cradle of Chinese civilization. An afternoon visit of about ninety minutes covers the main galleries. Famen Temple can be visited year-round, though the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, or weekends, often coincide with special relic viewings and larger crowds. Small restaurants and noodle stalls near Fufeng County serve a midday meal between the two stops, with more dining options available once travelers reach Baoji city center.
