About Wuzhong
Wuzhong lies in the Yinchuan Plain along the Yellow River, irrigated by canals that date back more than 2,000 years, which locals call the source of Ningxia's nickname 'Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall'. About one third of the resident population is Hui Muslim, and the city's mosques, halal restaurants and morning tea houses reflect that heritage. The most visited sights sit in Qingtongxia, an hour's drive south of the urban core, where the Yellow River cuts a narrow gorge past the Ming-era 108 Dagobas and the modern Yellow River Tower. Wuzhong is a much smaller and less internationally known destination than Yinchuan or Xi'an; it has no airport of its own, limited English signage, and a genuinely modest range of tourist hotels and sit-down restaurants compared with a major city, so it suits travellers who want an authentic, low-tourist-traffic look at Hui culture and Yellow River scenery rather than a polished resort experience.

- Largest city

- Population
- About 1.38 million (2020 census) across the whole prefecture-level city; the Litong District urban core is a small fraction of that
- Languages

- Currency
- Renminbi / Chinese yuan (CNY, symbol ¥), floating exchange rate of about 6.7-6.9 CNY per 1 USD in September 2026

Essential travel tips
- There is no airport in Wuzhong; fly into Yinchuan Hedong International Airport (INC) and continue by high-speed rail (about 30-45 minutes) or road (about 1 hour) to Wuzhong
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to a foreign Visa/Mastercard before arrival; many small restaurants and stalls no longer take cash easily
- Install a VPN before entering China if Google, WhatsApp or foreign social media access is needed, since these are blocked nationwide
- Hire a local driver or join a small day tour for Qingtongxia's 108 Dagobas, Yellow River Tower and the Grand Canyon boat ride, since public transport between the sites is infrequent
- Learn or save a few Mandarin phrases; English signage is limited to major hotels and a handful of Qingtongxia ticket offices
- Book the Qingtongxia Yellow River boat trip in the morning, since afternoon winds can cancel sailings
- Bring cash in small denominations as backup for rural stalls near Tongxin and Hongsibu that may not take mobile payment
