Nanhu Park, or South Lake Park, lies at No. 2715 Gongnong Road in Chaoyang District, Changchun, Jilin Province, and is one of the largest and best-known urban parks in northeast China. The park was developed from the 1930s as part of the planned Manchukuo capital of Xinjing, when planners created a large artificial lake and landscaped surroundings on the southern side of the city as a recreational and ornamental setting, in keeping with the garden-city ideas that shaped the capital plan. After 1945 the park continued as a municipal amenity and was extended and renovated several times in the decades that followed. Its central feature is the lake itself, crossed by bridges and ringed by paths, lawns, pavilions, and tree-lined embankments, with islands and shoreline viewpoints. In summer, boats can be rented on the lake at roughly ¥30 to ¥50 per hour, and a botanical garden within the park charges a separate fee of about ¥20 to ¥30. In winter the lake freezes, and the park is used for skating and other ice activities, while the snowy landscape is a regular subject for local photographers. The park's design combines Chinese garden elements, such as pavilions and arched bridges, with the broad open lawns and promenades of a modern city park. Because it was planned as an integral part of Xinjing, it is also a useful site for understanding how the 1930s capital was meant to function, with green space balanced against administrative and residential districts. Entry to most areas is free and the park is open year-round, which makes it a convenient low-cost stop between heritage sites in Chaoyang District. Visitors can walk the full shoreline loop in a couple of hours, rent a boat, or simply sit near the water. The park is also a social space, with local residents practising tai chi, dancing, playing cards, and flying kites, giving a view of everyday life in Changchun.
