About Jilin

Jilin covers about 187,400 km² of plains, forested mountains, and volcanic highlands in the centre of northeast China, home to roughly 24 million people. Changchun, the capital and largest city, holds the Puppet Emperor's Palace (the former residence of Puyi under Japanese-controlled Manchukuo), the Changchun Film Studio museum, and the forested Jingyuetan park. Jilin City, on the Songhua River, is famous for winter rime ice and for the Beidahu and Songhuahu ski resorts. In the east, the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture (Yanji, Longjing, Hunchun) offers Korean-Chinese food and culture and the Fangchuan viewpoint where China, Russia and North Korea meet. The Changbai Mountain range holds Heaven Lake, a volcanic crater lake on the North Korean border, and the Tonghua area includes the Goguryeo capital sites at Ji'an. In the west, Chagan Lake and the Xianghai wetland draw winter fishing and migratory bird visitors. Winters are long and well below freezing; summers are warm and short. Regional high-speed trains link the main cities, and Dongbei food is generous and inexpensive.

Getting around Jilin

Jilin Province is served by six commercial airports (Changchun, Yanji, Baishan Changbaishan, Tonghua, Songyuan and Baicheng), a backbone of high-speed rail from Changchun, and an extensive coach network. The provincial capital Changchun is the main gateway; Yanji is the hub for the Korean-ethnic Yanbian prefecture, the Tumen River border and Changbai Mountain's north slope; and Baishan and Songjianghe serve the west slope. Rail is the fastest and cheapest way between cities, while a hired car and driver is the practical option for Changbai Mountain, Chagan Lake and rural areas. Jilin City's Ertaizi Airport (JIL) has had no regular passenger service since 2005, so Jilin City is reached through Changchun.

Late June to August for Changbai Mountain and Heaven Lake (though clear views are never guaranteed), mid-September to early October for autumn colour, and January to February for skiing and rime ice.

Reports in 2026 state that access to Tianchi is closed during strong winds, fog, rain, snow or icy roads, and that the full clear blue-lake view is available only about 50 days a year. The north and west slopes are generally open year-round except in extreme weather, while the south slope is seasonal (roughly June to October); verify status with the Changbai Mountain management committee before travel.

INFO

Register with a hotel on arrival: hotels must record the passport and send it to the police; travelers staying with friends must register at the local police station (派出所) within 24 hours

INFO

INFO

Winter in Changchun and Yanji reaches -20 to -30 C at night from December to February; wear thermal layers, insulated boots, a hat and gloves, and watch for black ice

INFO

Near the Tumen River and Yalu River borders with North Korea (Tumen, Hunchun, Ji'an, Linjiang, Changbai County), do not photograph military personnel, checkpoints or border installations, do not fly drones and do not approach restricted zones

INFO

Changbai Mountain summit weather changes fast; access to Heaven Lake is closed in strong wind, fog, rain, snow or ice, so carry a windproof jacket even in July and follow staff instructions

INFO

Smog can occur in Changchun and Jilin City during the heating season (November-March); check an AQI app and wear an N95 or KN95 mask on days above 150
