Changchun is the capital of Jilin province in northeast China, a planned railway-and-capital city best known as China's 'City of Automobiles' and for the former imperial palace of Puyi, the last Qing emperor, who ruled the Japanese-controlled state of Manchukuo from here. Wide boulevards, the Jingyuetan forest lake, China's oldest film studio and long, dry winters make it a quieter, cheaper alternative to Harbin and Shenyang.
Changchun nightlife is informal and beer-led: most evenings centre on barbecue and skewers, followed by a small cocktail or whisky bar and karaoke (KTV). The densest cluster is the Guilin Road and Guilin Hutong area in Chaoyang District near Jilin University, where food stalls, student bars and a handful of hidden-entrance cocktail bars sit within walking distance. Hongqi Street and Wanda Plaza carry a second cluster of barbecue restaurants and bistros, while the Convention Center and Nanhu Park areas hold quieter whisky lounges and live-music bars.
