Songhua Lake (Fengman Reservoir), Jilin City

Songhua Lake, also called Fengman Reservoir, lies in Fengman District to the south-east of Jilin City in China's Jilin Province, about 120 km from Changchun. It is a large man-made reservoir created by the Fengman dam, whose construction began in the 1930s, and it is among the best-known lake destinations in the province. The shore here is a scenic lakeside rather than a sandy beach: it is an inland freshwater reservoir with no tide or surf, and it is long and irregular in shape, with the lake winding between hills. The character is that of a sightseeing destination rather than a swimming resort, and published sources emphasise boat cruises, lakeside promenades and viewpoints rather than bathing. Visitor facilities in the scenic area include boat cruises, sightseeing vehicles that carry visitors between points, an amusement park on Wuhu Island, a lakeside promenade, toilets and snack stalls. Lifeguard hours and sun-lounger style amenities were not found in published sources. The scenic area is typically open from about 08:00 to 17:00. Entry was listed at ¥10 (about $1.50), with a further ¥10 for the sightseeing vehicles, although prices should be confirmed before travel. Getting there from Changchun is a two-step journey: a high-speed or intercity train to Jilin takes about 30-60 minutes, and city buses 33 or 333 or a Didi then continue to the scenic area. Sources differ on the distance from the centre of Jilin City, giving figures between about 10 and 24 km, so allow generous transfer time. The best months are June to September, when cruises operate and the hills are green. The lake is also a winter ice-and-snow venue, making it a year-round destination for those already travelling around Jilin Province, and it is often combined with other Jilin City sights as a day trip or overnight stop from Changchun.
