Tongli Water Town

Tongli Water Town is an ancient canal town in Wujiang District, about 18 km south of Suzhou's old city in Jiangsu province, China, with more than 1,000 years of history. The town sits on a network of canals and lakes, and its centre is divided into islands linked by dozens of stone bridges. Most of the historic core dates to the Ming and Qing dynasties, and rows of whitewashed houses with dark tiled roofs line the waterways. It is one of the best-known of the Jiangnan water towns and a popular half-day excursion from Suzhou.

The main sight is the Retreat and Reflection Garden (Tuisi Yuan), a UNESCO-listed classical garden built in the late 19th century in which the buildings appear to float on the water. Other stops include the Pearl Pagoda area, the Three Bridges (Sanqiao), traditionally crossed by newlyweds for luck, the Chongben Hall and local museums such as one on Chinese marriage customs. Visitors can also take boat rides through the canals and walk along the lanes, where shops sell local snacks such as braised pork and handmade crafts.

A visit takes three to four hours. The best photo angles are from the stone bridges looking along the canals, and from the garden's waterside pavilions, with early morning offering calm reflections and fewer people. The older lanes away from the main streets are quieter and give a better sense of local daily life.

Hours are typically about 08:00 to 17:00. A combined ticket costs about CNY 100, and visitors should confirm the current price in the app; children pay about half price. Boat tours are an extra cost. Crowds are heaviest on weekends, public holidays and midday, when tour groups arrive, and weekday mornings in autumn are the most pleasant. Access from Suzhou is by bus from Suzhou South bus station in about an hour, or by Didi for about CNY 100. Staying overnight allows visitors to see the streets after the day-trippers leave, when the town becomes much quieter and lantern light reflects on the water.
