Shijiu Lake

Shijiu Lake is a large freshwater lake in Gaochun District, about 90 km south of central Nanjing, Jiangsu province, and the most rural of the waterfront options in the city area. It is not a sea beach: the shoreline consists of lakeside paths, reed edges, embankments and farmland rather than sand or pebbles, and the water is not managed for swimming, so visitors come for cycling, walking, boat trips and countryside scenery. The lake is broad and open, with gentle, sheltered water and a calm, rural atmosphere far from the crowds of central Nanjing. The character is quiet and slow-paced, popular with families and couples on weekend trips and with cyclists using lakeside routes. Small boat trips run seasonally, and rural guesthouses and lakeside restaurants serve local dishes, often featuring fish and produce from the surrounding area. Amenities are basic outside the main scenic points, and there are no sun loungers or lifeguards, so visitors should carry water and sun protection. Access takes planning. An intercity coach from Nanjing to Gaochun takes about 1.5-2 hours, and a local taxi is then needed to reach the lake area. A chartered car is the most predictable option, especially for reaching lakeside spots and returning the same day. April-June and September-October offer the most pleasant weather for cycling and boat rides, while summer is hot and humid and winter is cold and quiet. Because of the distance, the lake is best treated as a full-day trip or an overnight stay in a rural guesthouse rather than a quick outing. Visitors seeking a nearer waterfront should consider the Yangtze banks at Yanziji or Jiangxinzhou, whereas Shijiu Lake rewards those who want space, countryside and a slower pace within the wider Nanjing area.
