About Kunshan

Kunshan lies in the Yangtze River Delta between Shanghai and Suzhou, about 50 km west of central Shanghai. Its centre is a modern manufacturing and electronics city, while the south holds three historic water towns: Zhouzhuang, with its Twin Bridges and Ming-Qing mansions; Jinxi, a quieter lakeside town; and Qiandeng, the hometown of the scholar Gu Yanwu. Kunqu opera, recognised by UNESCO as intangible heritage, took shape here in the 14th century, and Aozao noodles and Wansan pork trotter are the local dishes. With Shanghai 15-20 minutes away by high-speed train, Kunshan suits a night or two as a calmer, cheaper base.

Essential travel tips

  • Kunshan is 15-20 minutes by high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao to Kunshan South station, which makes it an easy day trip or a cheaper base than central Shanghai.
  • Zhouzhuang is best visited on a weekday and early: day-trip coaches from Shanghai arrive from about 10:00 and leave by 16:00, so evenings and early mornings are quiet.
  • Buy train tickets on the 12306 app or Trip.com with the passport number; Kunshan South (G/D trains) and Kunshan station (slower K/Z trains) are different stations about 2 km apart.
  • Take Suzhou Metro Line 11 from Huaqiao to link with Shanghai Metro Line 11, or ride it west to Weiting in Suzhou Industrial Park.
  • Order Aozao noodles (奥灶面) at breakfast, when the soup is freshest and the best-known shops are busiest.
  • Check opening hours and booking rules for museums on the venue's WeChat mini-program; several require a passport-based reservation.
  • Winter nights are cold and damp and many older buildings have weak heating; ask hotels about heaters when booking from December to February.

Safety information

INFO

Kunshan is a very safe, orderly city; violent crime against visitors is rare and CCTV coverage is dense in the centre, on Zhouzhuang's streets and at stations.

INFO

Set up Alipay (with TourCard or a linked foreign card) or WeChat Pay before arrival, since many taxis, small restaurants and stalls prefer QR payment; carry CNY 300-500 (~$45-75) in cash as backup.

INFO

Use the Didi app or metered taxis from a station rank rather than unlicensed drivers who approach arriving passengers at Kunshan South station.

INFO

Carry the physical passport at all times: it is needed for train tickets, hotel registration and tickets to Zhouzhuang and Jinxi sites.

INFO

In Zhouzhuang, confirm boat and rowing-boat prices at the official ticket windows before boarding rather than negotiating with touts on the bridges.

INFO

Do not drink tap water; use boiled or bottled water (CNY 2-3, ~$0.30-0.45, at any convenience store).

INFO

Cross roads carefully: electric scooters and delivery bikes often run quietly through red lights and on pavements.

INFO

Emergency numbers: police 110, ambulance 120, fire 119, traffic accidents 122; the 12345 city hotline and 12301 tourism line are Mandarin-only, so use a translation app.
