Zhijin Cave (Zhijin Dong) in Zhijin County, Bijie, Guizhou province, is among the largest show caves in China and the best-known cave-exploration experience in western Guizhou. The activity is a guided walking tour of a lit route of roughly 2-3 km through enormous underground halls, past towering stalagmite columns, calcite curtains, flowstone terraces and formations that guides name after mythic figures and everyday objects. Chambers are large enough that the scale, rather than tight squeezes, defines the visit, and the route follows built walkways and steps with handrails rather than requiring technical caving skills.

Fitness prerequisites are modest. Visitors need to manage two to three hours of continuous walking on stairs and uneven, sometimes damp surfaces, with a number of climbs and descents between halls. There is no formal age limit, and families with school-age children commonly visit, though very young children and anyone with heart or knee problems may find the stairs tiring. The cave stays cool year-round, typically well below surface summer temperatures, so a warm layer is advisable even in July.

Equipment is minimal. The scenic area provides the lighting and the marked route; visitors bring non-slip shoes, a warm layer, water and a camera that copes with low light. A small torch is useful for the dim side passages, although the main route is illuminated. Helmets and special clothing are not normally required on the standard tour, while off-route caving is not part of the public product.

The operator is the scenic-area management with its own staff and cave guides, who lead groups and enforce route rules. Safety is handled through fixed walkways, handrails, lit paths and staff stationed along the route; visitors are expected to stay on the marked path and avoid touching formations. In an emergency, scenic-area staff coordinate assistance and evacuation to the entrance, and the entrance area has the basic services typical of a major Chinese scenic site.

The cave can be visited all year because its internal conditions barely change. Heavy rain in the surrounding karst can make the approach roads and entrance paths slippery, and peak holiday periods such as the early-October Golden Week and the Spring Festival bring crowds and queues. Weekday mornings in the shoulder seasons are generally the quietest. Visitors should allow time for the drive from Bijie or Guiyang, as Zhijin County lies a considerable distance from the provincial capital.
