Hongfeng Lake Water Sports

Hongfeng Lake (Hongfeng Hu) is a large reservoir lake in Qingzhen, on the western edge of Guiyang in Guizhou province, and the Hongfeng Lake Scenic Area is a popular day trip for water-based recreation. The lake's many islands, peninsulas and bays make it suitable for boat tours, kayaking, paddling and lakeside cycling, with rentals and short tours run by local concessions around the shoreline. It is one of the easiest places near the provincial capital to get on the water without any specialist experience.

The activity is rated easy. No prior skill is required for the sightseeing boat tours or for pedalling and paddling in calm sections, and participants only need to be able to sit in a boat and wear a life jacket. Kayaking and paddle rentals suit beginners in sheltered bays, though stronger paddlers may prefer the open stretches. Concessions often set a minimum age or require children to be accompanied, and visitors who cannot swim should stick to supervised boat tours or stay close to shore.

Equipment is generally provided by the rental concession: boats, paddles and life jackets are included in the fee. Visitors bring quick-dry clothing, sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof phone pouch, plus a change of clothes if they plan to paddle. Prices usually range from about CNY 60 to 200 depending on the activity and duration, and lakeside bikes are available separately for those who want to circle parts of the shore.

Operators are local lake rental concessions rather than certified adventure outfitters, so visitors should check that boats are in good repair, life jackets are issued and staff supervise the launch area. A short verbal briefing on staying within the marked area and keeping life jackets on is typical. Rescue relies on concession staff, patrol boats and the scenic area's management, and visitors should avoid straying from the designated zones.

The water season is mainly May to September, when temperatures are warm and conditions are pleasant for paddling. Summer afternoons can bring sudden thunderstorms, and strong wind can make the open lake choppy, so morning outings are often better. Weekends and holidays draw crowds from Guiyang, so weekday trips offer a quieter lake. Outside the main season some rentals reduce hours or close.
