Weizhou Island South Bay Volcanic Coast

South Bay sits on the southern shore of Weizhou Island, roughly 20 nautical miles off Beihai in the Gulf of Tonkin, and is defined less by a conventional swimming beach than by its dramatic volcanic coastline. Dark basalt cliffs, exposed lava layers, and sea caves carved by wave action line the shore, with only narrow pockets of coarse sand and shingle at the base of the cliffs where the coast flattens out. The coast faces open sea and is more exposed to wind and swell than the island's sheltered bays, so the water here is better suited to viewing and photography than to swimming, with a rockier and more rugged character than the calmer beaches on the island's north side. A network of cliff-top walking paths and viewpoint platforms runs along the top of the coast, giving visitors elevated views over the black rock formations and the sea below, and small beachside cafes cluster near the main access points for those walking the trail. Boat tours depart from the island's harbour to sail along the base of the cliffs, passing sea caves and columnar lava formations that are difficult to appreciate fully from land. The area is popular with photographers, particularly around sunset when the low light picks out the texture of the volcanic rock, and with travellers interested in geology rather than sunbathing. Reaching South Bay requires a ferry from Beihai followed by a moped, golf cart, or bicycle ride across the island to the southern coast.
