Weizhou Island Shiluokou Beach (Conch Beach)

Shiluokou Beach, also known as Conch Beach, sits on Weizhou Island roughly 36 kilometres off the coast of Beihai in the Gulf of Tonkin. It is a compact, sheltered bay of coarse sand mixed with shell and coral fragments, backed by low volcanic cliffs that block much of the prevailing wind and keep the water noticeably calmer than the island's more exposed shores. The water here is clearer than on the mainland beaches near Beihai, with a blue-green tint that makes it one of the better spots on the island for snorkelling among the fringing coral patches just offshore. The vibe is quieter and more low-key than a mainland resort beach, drawing snorkellers, divers, and travellers staying at the guesthouses within walking distance rather than large tour groups. Amenities are modest: a handful of beachfront seafood restaurants and small equipment-rental huts offer mask and fin hire, and a few guesthouses back directly onto the sand. There are no large-scale changing facilities or lifeguard towers, so swimmers should be self-sufficient. Access is only by ferry from Beihai's International Passenger Terminal, a crossing of one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half hours, followed by a short moped, golf cart, or walk from the island's main settlement. Because the island sits in a typhoon-prone part of the Gulf of Tonkin, ferry cancellations are common between July and September, and visitors should build flexibility into any itinerary that includes this beach.
