Weizhou Island (Weizhou Dao)

Weizhou Island (Weizhou Dao) is China's largest and geologically youngest volcanic island, formed by eruptions estimated at one to two million years ago and reached by a roughly 1.5-hour high-speed ferry from Beihai across the Gulf of Tonkin. Visitors spend their time circling the island's coastal road, which passes exposed volcanic rock formations at Wumaotan in the south and the Crescent Bay Sea Cave, where layered basalt cliffs meet black-sand and coral-fragment beaches. Inland, the roads cut through banana and mango plantations, small Zhuang and Han fishing villages, and a cluster of 19th-century Catholic missionary churches built from coral stone. A full loop of the island by scooter or electric buggy covers about 24 kilometers and takes half a day with stops; most visitors stay overnight to fit in both the sunrise at Wumaotan's volcanic crater rim and sunset from the island's western coast near Nanwan. The island's main town, near the ferry pier, has guesthouses and seafood restaurants serving the day's catch, and diving or snorkeling trips to the coral reefs off the southeast coast are commonly arranged from there. Ferries run a limited daily schedule and are frequently suspended during typhoon season (roughly July through September), so trips should be planned with a flexible return date in that window. Midweek visits outside the summer holiday period are markedly quieter than weekends, when day-trippers from Beihai crowd the main beaches and rental-scooter queues at the pier.
