Two Rivers and Four Lakes Night Cruise

The Two Rivers and Four Lakes Night Cruise is an evening boat circuit that links the Li River and Taohua (Peach Blossom) River with four connected lakes -- Shanhu, Ronghu, Guihu, and Mulong -- through a series of locks and canals completed in the early 2000s along the route of Guilin's historic city moat. Boats depart from piers near Wenchang Bridge or the Riyue (Sun and Moon) Pagoda area and follow a roughly two-hour loop past more than a dozen illuminated bridges, pagodas, and riverside gardens built or restored specifically for the night circuit. The visual centerpiece is the pair of Sun and Moon Twin Pagodas rising from Shanhu Lake, a nine-story gold pagoda and a seven-story silver-colored pagoda connected by an underwater tunnel, both lit at night and reflected in the lake surface. Other landmarks along the route include the Ancient South Gate and Banyan Tree at Rong Lake, Diecai and Fubo hills viewed from the water, and a series of stone and glass footbridges each designed in a different historical style. The cruise runs almost entirely after sunset, with boats departing roughly every 30 minutes between 7:30 and 9:30 PM depending on the season; the ride itself covers about 8 kilometers and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Best views are from the open upper deck rather than the enclosed lower cabin, and the Shanhu Lake pagoda stretch is the point most passengers photograph. Crowds are heaviest on the first and last boats of the evening and during summer holiday weeks; mid-week departures in shoulder season are noticeably quieter. The boats are enclosed against rain but open to the night air on the upper deck, so cooler evenings call for a jacket even in a subtropical city.
