Longji Rice Terraces, Ping'an Zhuang Village

Ping'an village sits partway up the Longji Scenic Area's terraced slopes, roughly two and a half hours by road from Guilin in Longsheng County. The terraces were cut into the mountainside by Zhuang farmers beginning centuries ago, and the contour lines still follow the natural slope rather than a grid, producing the curving patterns visible from the village's two main viewpoints, Seven Stars Accompanying the Moon and Nine Dragons Five Tigers. Wooden stilt houses line the paths between the viewpoints, many now operating as guesthouses and small restaurants serving bamboo-cooked rice and local mountain vegetables. A cable car connects the village entrance to the upper viewpoints for visitors who prefer not to make the 30 to 45 minute uphill walk. The terraces change character through the year: flooded and mirror-like in April and May before rice is transplanted, deep green through the summer growing season, and golden at harvest in late September and October. Staying overnight in one of the village guesthouses allows visitors to see the terraces lit by sunrise and sunset, when day-trip crowds have left and the light is at its most dramatic.
