Impression Sanjie Liu (Yangshuo Light Show)

Impression Sanjie Liu is staged on an open-air section of the Li River just outside Yangshuo town, using twelve real karst peaks visible in the background as a natural stage set rather than a built theater backdrop. Director Zhang Yimou developed the production together with more than 600 local fishermen, farmers, and residents who perform in it nightly, working bamboo rafts fitted with lanterns and colored lights across the water in choreographed formations. The hour-long show retells the folk legend of Liu Sanjie, a Zhuang singing heroine celebrated in regional oral tradition, through a sequence of scenes combining traditional song, lantern displays, and floating light installations that transform the river surface into a moving stage. Seating rises in tiers along the riverbank at the Yangshuo Sanjie Liu Theatre, with rows closest to the water offering the clearest, most unobstructed sightlines of the floating performers. Because the show runs outdoors after sunset, temperatures drop quickly along the river even in warmer months, and performances occasionally adjust or cancel due to weather. Two nightly shows are typically scheduled to accommodate demand, with the earlier show generally less crowded.
