The Snake Pit

The Snake Pit is a dive bar tucked into a side street near Sea World Plaza in Shekou, Nanshan District, and has operated continuously since 1987, making it one of the oldest expatriate-run bars on the Chinese mainland. The crowd skews toward long-term Shekou expatriates, sailors and merchant-marine crew passing through the nearby port, and regulars who have been drinking there for decades, giving the room a worn, unpretentious, no-frills character rather than a polished club atmosphere; there is no dress code and the age range runs from twenties to sixties. Music is incidental rather than programmed, typically low-volume rock and classic hits from a jukebox or house speakers, with conversation and darts taking priority over any dance floor. The drinks list favors cheap domestic and imported beer by the bottle over cocktails, with mixed drinks available but rarely the draw. The Snake Pit opens at 5:00 PM and runs to about 2:00 AM daily, with weeknights drawing a smaller core of regulars and weekends bringing a fuller, louder room as the wider Shekou bar scene empties out later in the night. There is no cover charge, no reservation system, and no bottle service; entry is simply a matter of walking in.
