Dapeng Fortress Ancient City

Dapeng Fortress Ancient City sits in Longgang District, a coastal defense town built during the Ming dynasty in 1394 to guard against pirate raids along the Guangdong coast, making it far older than the modern city that grew up around it. Sections of the original stone-and-brick city wall and gate towers survive, enclosing a grid of narrow lanes lined with Qing-dynasty courtyard houses, several of which belonged to Qing military officers and are open as small house museums with period furnishings. Visitors walk the old streets between the East and West gates, climb sections of the restored wall for views over the surrounding hills, and can visit the General's Mansion and other preserved residences that display uniforms, weapons, and family artifacts from the fortress's military history. A visit takes two to three hours to cover the main gates, wall sections, and a few house museums; weekday mornings are best, since the site draws organized tour groups by midday. The gate towers and the stretch of restored wall near the East Gate are the most photographed spots, particularly in soft morning light. Because Dapeng sits on Shenzhen's eastern coast, it is often combined with a beach visit to nearby Dapeng Peninsula on the same day trip. Bus connections from the metro take some time, so allowing a half day for the full outing is realistic.
