Beijing Road Pedestrian Street

Beijing Road is a 1,500-meter pedestrian shopping street in the heart of Yuexiu District that has functioned as one of Guangzhou's principal commercial thoroughfares for roughly two thousand years, with archaeological excavations beneath the modern street surface revealing layered road foundations from the Tang, Song, Ming and Qing dynasties. A section of the street features a protected glass viewing panel set into the pavement, allowing visitors to look down at the exposed layers of ancient paving stones stacked beneath the current walkway, a rare visible cross-section of the city's continuous urban history. Above ground, the street today is lined with department stores, international and domestic fashion retailers, bookshops and street-food vendors, drawing dense crowds of shoppers, particularly in the evening. A visit combining a walk of the full street, a stop at the archaeological viewing panel and some browsing takes about one and a half to two and a half hours. The clearest photo vantage point is directly over the glass archaeological panel, framing the layered ancient road surfaces beneath modern foot traffic, while the street's illuminated shopfronts and video screens make for a lively evening photo backdrop. The street is busiest in the evening and on weekends, when it becomes one of the most crowded pedestrian areas in the city center; a late-morning visit offers noticeably more room to walk and view the archaeological panel without jostling for space.
