Sacred Heart Cathedral (Shishi/Stone House Church)

The Sacred Heart Cathedral, known locally as Shishi or 'Stone House' for its granite construction, stands on Yide Road in Yuexiu District and is one of the largest all-granite Gothic cathedrals in the world, built between 1863 and 1888 entirely from stone quarried and carved by Chinese craftsmen under French Catholic direction. Sometimes called the 'Notre-Dame of the East,' its twin spires rise 58.5 meters above the surrounding streets, visible from a distance across the old city, while the interior features tall stained-glass windows, ribbed vaulting and a nave capable of holding over a thousand worshippers. Visitors enter through the western facade's main doors into the long nave, where light filtered through stained glass falls across granite columns carved with restrained Gothic detailing, quite different from the ornate wood-carved temples found elsewhere in the city. A visit typically takes thirty to forty-five minutes, enough time to walk the nave, view the stained glass and step outside to photograph the twin spires from the plaza in front. The clearest photo vantage point is the open square directly facing the western facade, which frames both towers symmetrically. Because the cathedral operates on restricted hours on weekdays, closing at midday and reopening in the afternoon, and is closed entirely on Mondays, weekend visits during the full 8:30AM-5:30PM hours offer the most flexible window for an unhurried visit.
