City museum inside the Culture and Art Center, covering Xiamen's history from prehistory through the treaty-port and SEZ periods. Entry is free.
Xiamen Museum occupies part of the Culture and Art Center at 95 Tiyu Road in Siming District, Xiamen, Fujian province, China. It is the city's general history museum and presents Xiamen's story in chronological order. The opening galleries cover prehistoric finds from the region and the early Han Chinese settlement of the coast, followed by the Tang and Song periods, when southern Fujian became linked to the maritime trade across the South China Sea. Later rooms deal with the Ming and Qing dynasties, the role of Xiamen in the resistance led by Zheng Chenggong, known in the West as Koxinga, and the nineteenth century, when the city was opened as a treaty port after the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 and Gulangyu became a foreign settlement. The final sections cover the Republican era, the wartime years and the post-1949 city, including its designation as a Special Economic Zone in 1980. Exhibits include ceramics, bronzes, coins, maps, historic photographs, models of old streets and everyday objects. Displays use a mix of cases, dioramas and multimedia, and the space is modern, air-conditioned and spacious, making it a comfortable rainy-day stop. The museum occupies a purpose-built civic building rather than a historic structure, so its interest lies in the collection rather than the architecture. Entry is free, and visitors may be asked to show a passport or ID. It is closed on Mondays except for public holidays, with last entry at 17:00. The museum is well suited to travellers who want background before visiting Gulangyu, Zhongshan Road or the Xiamen University campus, and the nearby Culture and Art Center also contains a library and theatre. Some labels have English translations, but not all. Rotating special exhibitions on ceramics, calligraphy, local crafts and folk customs supplement the permanent galleries, so a return visit may show different material. A cafe and the library in the same Culture and Art Center make it easy to extend the stop.
