A VPN set up before arrival is needed for Google, WhatsApp and many Western apps; Chinese apps (Amap, Baidu Maps, Didi, Trip.com) work without one
On Gulangyu, buy ferry tickets only through the official Xiamen ferry (厦门轮渡) channel, Trip.com or the ticket office; tickets are real-name, so carry the passport used for booking

Policies and eligible countries change, so check nia.gov.cn or a Chinese embassy before booking.
Foreign visitors use the Xiamen International Cruise Center terminal (厦门国际邮轮中心) and need their passport number to buy a real-name ticket through the official ferry app, WeChat mini-program or the terminal counters. The round trip is about ¥35 (~$5), and tickets sell out on weekends and holidays, so book ahead.
