Pedestrian street of 1920s arcade shophouses (qilou) in a mixed Minnan and Western style, built when overseas-Chinese investment reshaped the old city. Many buildings now hold snack shops and heritage storefronts.
Zhongshan Road is a pedestrian street of arcade shophouses, known in Chinese as qilou, in Siming District in the old centre of Xiamen, Fujian province, China. The street was developed in the 1920s as part of a wave of urban renewal that was financed in large part by overseas Chinese who had made money in Southeast Asia and returned to invest in their home city. The qilou form, with a shop at street level and a covered walkway beneath the upper floors, is common in southern China and across Southeast Asia, where it protects pedestrians from sun and rain. In Xiamen the arcades are combined with Western-style columns, pediments and decorative plaster, and with Minnan elements such as roof ridges and tiled details. The street runs roughly toward the harbour, near the pier from which ferries cross to Gulangyu, so it remains a busy route for visitors. The shopfronts now include snack shops, tea and souvenir stores, cafes and heritage storefronts, and Fujian specialities such as peanut soup, oyster omelettes and sesame pastries are widely sold. Side lanes lead to older neighbourhoods and small temples. The facades have been restored in recent decades, with some rebuilding, and the street was pedestrianised to keep it comfortable for walking. In the evening, the arcades are lit and crowded. There is no admission charge, and the street is open all day. Because it is easy to reach and close to the ferry, it fits well before or after a Gulangyu trip, and it gives a clear view of how Xiamen looked during its Republican-era boom. Historic plaques on several buildings identify former banks, department stores and cinemas of the Republican era, and short side lanes lead to older temples and market streets. Walking the full length takes roughly fifteen minutes without stops, although most visitors linger much longer.
