Anhui Photography Guide 2026

Anhui through a lens: the spots worth carrying a camera for, timed to their best light.

This guide covers 13+ photography locations in Anhui — Huangshan Bright Summit Sunrise and Sea of Clouds, Start to Believe Peak (Shixin Feng) at Dawn and Welcoming Guest Pine at Yuping Lou top the list. Every recommendation carries its practical details: typical costs, the best time to visit, and what to know before you commit.

Anhui is an inland province in eastern China, best known for the granite peaks of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), the UNESCO-listed Huizhou villages of Hongcun and Xidi, and the Buddhist mountain of Jiuhua Shan. Its capital and largest city is Hefei. Anhui is the home of Hui cuisine, Xuan paper and Hui ink, and some of China's most famous teas. It has no sea coast, but the Yangtze River, Chaohu Lake and Taiping Lake give it plenty of waterfront.

Photo spot

Huangshan Bright Summit Sunrise and Sea of Clouds

The highest-profile sunrise spot on the mountain, best after rain when cloud fills the valleys below the peaks. Overnight at Beihai to be in position before first light.

Best time: Pre-dawn to about 30 minutes after sunrise, when clouds fill the valleys

Best time: Early morning before tour groups arrive

Photo spot

Xihai Grand Canyon Cliff Paths

Dramatic cliff walkways and layered pinnacles seen from above; low mist adds depth. Compositions from the plank walks need stability on narrow stairs.

Best time: Late morning to early afternoon when light reaches the canyon floor

Photo spot

Hongcun Nanhu Lake (Moon Pond) at Dawn

The Moon Pond and South Lake reflect white-walled Hui houses; the most photographed view in the UNESCO village. The village entrance ticket is about CNY 104 (~$16); confirm the current fare.

Best time: Dawn, with mist and reflections before day visitors arrive

Photo spot

Xidi Lanes and Memorial Archway

Stone-paved lanes, carved doorways and the Ming dynasty Hu Wenguang Memorial Archway. Lanes empty early in the morning.

Best time: Early morning and late afternoon for low side light in the stone lanes

Photo spot

Chengkan Village Bagua Layout and Ancestral Hall

A Bagua-plan village with the Luo family ancestral hall complex and canals; less crowded than Hongcun.

Best time: Morning light through the lanes and courtyards

Photo spot

Nanping Village Ancestral Halls

An old village of ancestral halls used as a film location for Zhang Yimou's Ju Dou. Verify access details locally.

Best time: Morning for interiors and courtyard light

Photo spot

Tangyue Memorial Archways at Golden Hour

A row of Ming and Qing memorial archways on the approach to the village, with Baolun Pavilion nearby; a quiet Huizhou culture stop. Verify opening times before travelling.

Best time: Golden hour, low side light on carved stone

Photo spot

Xin'an River Landscape Gallery at Dawn

Riverside villages and orchards under morning mist along the Xin'an River, viewed from the deck of the cruise boat or the river path.

Best time: Dawn mist over the river, first boat departure

Photo spot

Jiuhua Mountain Tiantai and Baisui Gong Temples

Golden-roofed temples layered against forested peaks. Seek permission before photographing monks or worshippers, and do not photograph inside prayer halls where signs forbid it.

A granite pinnacle above clouds; reach it before dawn or overnight nearby. Conditions vary, so check the forecast.

Photography tips

Make your shots stand out.

Tip

Carry passport or ID in a waterproof pouch; it is needed at Huangshan gates

Tip

Stay a night at Beihai or Bright Summit to catch sunrise; book weeks ahead for holidays

Tip

Drones are restricted in Huangshan Scenic Area, temple areas and many village heritage sites; check current local rules before flying

Tip

Hongcun and Xidi are best at dawn before day-trip coaches arrive

Tip

A polarizing filter helps with river and lake glare on the Xin'an River and Taiping Lake
