  • LightingEarly low sun through the canopy gives light shafts; overcast skies saturate leaf colour.
  • Best seasonOctober-November for foliage; April for blossom

Borisova Gradina is the oldest and largest city park in Sofia, Bulgaria, laid out in the late nineteenth century on the eastern side of the centre. Its long avenues of mature chestnut, linden, maple and plane trees make it the city's best location for autumn colour. The frames it offers are tree-lined paths with leaves in yellow, orange and red, open lawns with scattered trees, and quiet corners near the ponds and statues.

The strongest light is early morning, when low sun filters through the trees and creates shafts of light and long shadows on the paths; mist is possible on cool, still mornings and adds depth. October and November are the peak months for foliage, while April brings blossom and fresh green. Overcast days are also useful, since diffuse light saturates the colours and removes harsh contrast under the canopy, and a polarising filter reduces glare on wet leaves. After rain, leaves on the ground add colour to the foreground. The park is large, and most visitors stay near the main avenues, the Ariana lake area and sports facilities, so quiet paths are easy to find, especially on weekday mornings. Weekends in good autumn weather bring joggers, families and cyclists, and crowds fill the central avenues by late morning. Tripods are generally tolerated in the park if they do not block paths. There is no entrance fee. Drone flights over parks in Sofia are subject to Bulgarian aviation restrictions and should be checked before flying. A standard zoom handles most scenes, and a short telephoto helps isolate leaf colour and layers of trees. Cafes and public toilets are located near the lake and main entrances, and drinking water is available at kiosks. Paths are paved or compacted, making the park easy to explore on foot.
