Sofia Grad (Sofia City Province) is the compact capital region of Bulgaria, a 7,000-year-old city at the foot of Vitosha Mountain where Roman ruins, Orthodox domes, Ottoman mosques, Habsburg-style boulevards and Socialist-era monuments sit within a short walk of each other. The province consists of Sofia city and the small village of Lozen, so almost every sight, restaurant and hotel is in the capital itself. Visitors find cheap euro-priced food and drink, a four-line metro, lively cafe and rakia-bar culture, and hiking trails that start inside the city limits.
Sofia's nightlife is compact, affordable and centred on the area around Vitosha Boulevard, Tsar Shishman, Yanko Sakazov and the Lion's Bridge side of the centre. Evenings typically start on terraces and in cocktail bars, move to hidden or themed bars such as Hambara and Raketa, and end in live-music halls or the student clubs of Studentski Grad.
A mix of retro rakia bars, speakeasies, candlelit cellars, hotel rooftops and live-music clubs. House and techno dominate the larger clubs, while jazz, rock and ethno-jazz fill live venues. Bulgarian craft beer and rakia are the local drinks of choice.
