Founded in the Middle Ages and developed by the Ottomans from the 15th century, it is a protected national monument with a compact cluster of stone houses, towers, a mosque and a hamam. Narrow cobbled lanes wind uphill from the roadside entrance past houses with stone roofs and workshops selling souvenirs, pomegranates and local honey.

Počitelj is a fortified Ottoman village that climbs a steep hillside above the Neretva River near Čapljina, in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Hajji Alija Mosque, built in 1562 with a domed prayer hall and a stone minaret, stands near the centre, and a clock tower and the former Sisman Ibrahim-Pasha Madrasah are among other landmarks. At the top of the village, a hexagonal tower known as the Gavran-Kapetanović fortress offers views over the river, orchards and the surrounding valley. Visitors climb the uneven steps to the fort, which charges a small fee of around BAM 3-5, and some also enter the mosque when open. The village is open at all hours, with fortress and mosque hours around 09:00-18:00. A visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours, mainly for walking and photography. Artists' studios sometimes operate in the village, and a gallery occasionally hosts exhibitions. The best light falls in the evening, when the stone glows golden over the river, while midday heat in summer can be intense and the stone paths reflect it. The village is about 40 minutes by car from Mostar, and regional buses stop on the main road below the village, leaving a short uphill walk. Počitelj combines easily with the Kravice Waterfalls and Blagaj on a day trip from Mostar. Sturdy shoes are advisable because the lanes are steep and slippery.
