Tongabezi Lodge

Tongabezi Lodge occupies a private stretch of the southern Zambezi bank approximately 20 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls, reached by a private road from Livingstone. The lodge has operated since 1991 and was one of the first properties on the Zambian Zambezi to build accommodation in standalone river houses rather than conventional lodge rooms — a concept that has influenced the style of premium safari lodges across southern Africa. The property comprises six open-fronted cottages and four river houses, each individually designed and decorated with African art, locally commissioned furniture, and distinctive architectural features. Three of the river houses remove the fourth wall entirely, leaving only gauze curtains between the sleeping area and the flowing Zambezi — an immersive design that defines the lodge's character. Private timber decks extend over the water from each unit, most fitted with outdoor bathing areas and private plunge pools. No two units share an identical layout. Dining at Tongabezi is treated as a curated experience separate from simple meal service. The main dining area is a circular thatched pavilion above the river, but the kitchen regularly sets alternative scenes — meals on private sandbanks reached by boat, dinner on a floating pontoon at sunset, and canoe-delivered breakfasts to individual decks. The wine programme is curated from South African estates and selected European producers. The kitchen produces daily-changing contemporary African menus sourcing from local suppliers and the lodge's own herb garden. Sindabezi Island, a small eco-camp on a private island accessible by a short boat transfer, can be arranged as a day or overnight excursion for lodge guests. Activity options include Zambezi canoe cruises at sunrise and sunset, guided fishing, guided walks, and transfers to Victoria Falls by road. Maximum occupancy across all units is 22 guests, and butler-style personal service is assigned by cottage, with staff learning individual preferences within the first day of arrival. A two-night minimum stay applies. Children under seven years are not accommodated due to the open-river safety requirements of the structure design.
