Quang Ba Flower Market is Hanoi's wholesale flower market, at 236 Au Co in Quang An Ward, Tay Ho District, on the northeastern shore of West Lake in Vietnam. It is at its most extraordinary between 2AM and 6AM, when growers from Tay Tuu and Me Linh arrive on motorbikes stacked shoulder-high with roses, lilies, gladioli, chrysanthemums and orchids, and the city's florists bid for stock under bare bulbs. Retail trade continues through the day at higher prices. The market is not a souvenir destination: it sells cut flowers, potted plants and orchids, and its interest for visitors lies in the atmosphere of a working trading floor, a favourite with photographers. Peach blossom and kumquat trees take over the site in the fortnight before Tet, when Hanoi households buy them as festive decoration. Quality is high for the freshness of cut stock, and virtually all flowers are locally grown, so the question of authentic versus tourist goods does not arise. Bargaining is normal in bulk and wholesale trade, and small retail buyers can expect modest discounts, while prices quoted in bunches typically run from 50,000 to 300,000 VND. Payment is by cash, and card acceptance is rare. No tax refund applies. The atmosphere is fast, cool and slightly chaotic in the early morning, with traders moving quickly and little patience for hesitation, and much calmer and more colourful by daytime. Food options are found in the surrounding Tay Ho area, where cafes and street stalls serve breakfast, and lakeside restaurants open later in the day. The busiest section is the wholesale floor near the entrance, where motorbikes unload, while the retail stalls along the back sell arranged bouquets and plants. Visitors should be careful with cameras and stay out of the loading lanes.
