Hanoi Rock City

Hanoi Rock City is northern Vietnam's main independent live house, opened in December 2010 by a group of Hanoi musicians and artists at 27/52 To Ngoc Van, down a lane in Quang An Ward, Tay Ho District, near West Lake in Hanoi, Vietnam. An outdoor garden bar leads to an indoor stage that hosts Vietnamese rock, punk, metal and indie bands, touring acts from across Asia, electronic nights, art installations and open-mic evenings. The crowd is young, local and devoted, with musicians, students, artists and expatriates making up most of the audience, generally in their late teens to thirties. There is no dress code, and casual clothing and band T-shirts are the norm. The atmosphere is loud, informal and community-driven, with the garden serving as a social space between sets. Music depends on the night, but the programming leans towards live guitar-driven acts and alternative electronic events. The bar serves beer, spirits and simple mixed drinks at about 60,000-180,000 VND, roughly USD 2.31-6.92. Opening follows the events calendar rather than a fixed daily pattern: nights generally start from about 20:00 and run until late, and visitors should check the venue's listings for the schedule. Entry is ticketed per event at about 100,000-300,000 VND, or USD 3.85-11.54, though the price varies by act. There is no bottle service. Reservations are generally not needed, though tickets for larger touring acts may sell in advance through the venue's Facebook page. The lane setting away from the Old Quarter means most visitors travel by taxi or ride-hailing, and the neighbouring Furbrew taproom makes a natural pre-gig stop. Gig nights fill up later in the evening, so arriving at doors is the best way to secure a good position near the stage.
