Mua Cave (Hang Mua) Viewpoint Stairway, Ninh Binh

The Mua Cave (Hang Mua) Viewpoint Stairway is a stone stairway of about 500 steps climbing a limestone karst in Khe Dau Ha Village, Ninh Xuan Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh Province, about 100 km south of Hanoi, Vietnam. It ends at a dragon sculpture and a small shrine, with the classic overhead view of the Ngo Dong river winding through the Tam Coc rice fields. It is the standard leg-stretch on a Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi.

Entry is 100,000 VND per person, paid at the gate, so cash is useful. Trains from Hanoi Railway Station reach Ninh Binh in 2-2.5 hours for about 90,000-150,000 VND. Shared limousine vans from the Old Quarter cost 170,000-250,000 VND each way, and a local taxi or rented scooter covers the last 8 km from Ninh Binh town.

The round trip is only about 1.2 km, and the climb takes well under an hour, though 45-90 minutes is typical including time at the viewpoints. Gain is roughly 230 m to a summit of about 250 m, so the trail is easy in distance and technical difficulty, though the steepness is tiring in heat. The surface is uneven stone steps, slick in rain, and the stairway is fully exposed to sun with little shade.

The route has two main viewpoints. A branch leads to each side of the ridge, one toward the dragon sculpture on the higher peak and one toward a lower pavilion, and visitors can turn around at the first if crowds or heat are a problem. The cave and pond area at the base is a short walk from the ticket gate.

Water and drinks are sold near the entrance but not on the stairway, so visitors carry a bottle. There are no refuge huts, though small shrines offer brief shade. Closed shoes with grip and a sun hat are advisable.
