Ancient Tree Trail, Cuc Phuong National Park

The Ancient Tree Trail is the signature walk in Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam's oldest national park, in Nho Quan District, Ninh Binh Province, about 120 km southwest of Hanoi. It runs through primary limestone rainforest to a Tetrameles nudiflora buttress tree estimated at around 1,000 years old. The trail starts from the park centre, about 20 km inside the gate, and passes the Cave of Prehistoric Man on the way back out.

Trailhead access requires getting to the park headquarters. Park entry is 60,000 VND for adults, 20,000 VND for students and 10,000 VND for children. Buses from Giap Bat bus station run to Nho Quan for about 90,000-120,000 VND, and a taxi covers the last 20 km. A private car from Hanoi takes 2-2.5 hours and costs about 1,300,000-1,600,000 VND one way. Many visitors stay overnight in the park to avoid a rushed day.

The route is about 7 km round trip and takes 3-4 hours, though the visit occupies a full day including travel. The forest floor undulates between roughly 150 m and 350 m, with about 200 m of cumulative gain, so difficulty is moderate. The surface is dirt, tree roots and wet limestone, which is slippery after rain. Canopy cover is dense, giving near-constant shade but high humidity, and leeches are common from May to September.

The main landmark is the ancient buttress tree itself, with its huge plank-like roots, and the Cave of Prehistoric Man is a short detour on the return. Walkers who tire can turn back at the tree without missing the main attraction. The route is a well-defined out-and-back path.

There are no shops or refuge huts on the trail, so visitors carry about 2 litres of water and a packed lunch. A head torch is useful in the cave. Leech socks or gaiters, insect repellent and long sleeves are advisable in the wetter months.
