Wheeling Heritage Area

The Wheeling Heritage Area encompasses the historic waterfront and downtown district of Wheeling, the largest city in the northern West Virginia panhandle, situated on the Ohio River 55 miles south of Pittsburgh. The heritage area centers on the Ohio River islands and the former 19th-century commercial waterfront, where Wheeling once served as a major gateway city on the National Road — the first federally funded highway in the United States — and as an industrial center for glass, nail, and steel manufacturing. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, completed in 1849, is the oldest operating long-span suspension bridge in the United States and a National Historic Landmark, still carrying vehicle traffic across the Ohio River on its original towers. Heritage tourism in Wheeling is anchored by a cluster of walkable sites in the downtown core: the Capitol Theatre (1928), a restored atmospheric movie palace hosting concerts and events; Centre Market, a covered farmers market and artisan food hall operating on its original 1853 footprint; and the Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum in a nearby Victorian schoolhouse. The Wheeling Heritage Trail, a multi-use rail-trail, follows the Ohio River bank for 10 miles and connects the heritage area to residential neighborhoods and the river islands. The city's 19th-century commercial architecture — including the McLure House Hotel, built in 1852, and numerous Victorian storefronts — gives the downtown a visible depth of history. WesBanco Arena hosts events including the Wheeling Nailers hockey team, providing programming year-round in the heritage district. The city's Italian and Eastern European immigrant heritage is reflected in bakeries, delis, and cultural events that continue to distinguish the historic center.
