Mountain State Forest Festival (Elkins)

The Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins, Randolph County, West Virginia, is one of the oldest and largest annual festivals in the state, held during the first week of October to celebrate the state's forest heritage and Appalachian culture. The festival dates to 1930, when the West Virginia Department of Agriculture organized the first celebration to promote the state's timber and forest industries during a period of intensive reforestation following the logging era. Today the festival spans five to seven days and encompasses a wide range of events: a parade featuring elaborate floats, marching bands, and military units; the coronation of Queen Silvia and her royal court; a 5K and 10K trail run in the surrounding Monongahela National Forest; chainsaw carving competitions; craft and food vendor areas; and free outdoor concerts on the City Center stage. The coronation ceremony, held at the Davis & Elkins College amphitheater, is the festival's signature event and draws its largest crowd. The Elkins City Center and surrounding parks host most activities, making the festival largely walkable within a compact downtown area. Randolph County is surrounded by the Monongahela National Forest, and October brings full fall foliage to the surrounding ridges and valleys, providing a spectacular backdrop for the outdoor events. Lodging in Elkins is limited; visitors planning to attend peak days — particularly the coronation and main parade — should book accommodations in Elkins or nearby Parsons and Beverly well in advance.
