Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home

Hildene is the 412-acre Georgian Revival mansion and estate in Manchester, Vermont, that served as the summer home and eventual year-round residence of Robert Todd Lincoln — the eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln — and his descendants until 1975. Robert Todd Lincoln acquired the land in 1902 and personally directed design of the main house, completed in 1905, with 24 rooms and a 1,000-pipe Aeolian organ in the formal living hall that is still played today. The property remained in the Lincoln family for three generations before passing to the Friends of Hildene nonprofit, which operates it as a museum and working farm. The mansion is preserved with remarkable fidelity to the Lincoln family ownership period, including original furnishings, family photographs, and personal objects that create an intimate portrait of American upper-class domestic life in the early 20th century. Visitors tour the mansion with guides covering detailed family history, including Robert Todd Lincoln's distinguished career as a lawyer, Secretary of War under presidents Garfield and Arthur, and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. Beyond the house, the estate includes a formal garden designed in the pattern of a Gothic cathedral window, a working farm with sheep and goats, a restored 1903 Pullman parlor car that once carried the Lincoln family, and miles of walking trails through woodland and along a Battenkill River tributary. The Pullman car exhibition is particularly evocative, with restored interior appointments demonstrating the luxury of early rail travel. Sweeping views across the Battenkill Valley make Hildene one of the most picturesque historic properties in New England. A full estate visit covering the mansion, Pullman car, gardens, and farm typically takes 2–3 hours.
