The Crystal Ballroom

The Crystal Ballroom is Portland's most celebrated mid-size concert hall, occupying a historic 1914 building at 1332 W Burnside St in the West End of Portland, Oregon. Operated by McMenamins — the Pacific Northwest hospitality group known for restoring historic properties throughout Oregon and Washington — the ballroom has hosted over a century of musical performance, from big band dances in the early twentieth century through the psychedelic era of the 1960s to the contemporary indie, alternative, electronic, and hip-hop programming that defines its modern booking calendar. The building holds a listing on the National Register of Historic Places, and the ornate interior with its plasterwork ceilings and sweeping floor space has been carefully maintained since McMenamins completed a major restoration in 1997.

The hall's most distinctive feature is its spring-mounted dance floor — a system of ball bearings and springs beneath the wooden planks that imparts a subtle, perceptible bounce to the floor under the weight of a moving crowd. This floating floor technology dates to the building's original construction and is among only a handful of surviving examples in the United States. Concertgoers consistently describe the sensation as unlike any other venue in the Pacific Northwest, and it contributes significantly to the Crystal Ballroom's reputation as one of Portland's finest rooms to experience live music.

Programming is event-driven and spans a wide range of genres, with nationally touring acts sharing the calendar with notable local performers. Indie rock, alternative, electronic, hip-hop, folk, and occasional comedy or theatrical events all appear regularly. Doors open typically at 7 PM, with performances beginning between 8 PM and 9 PM. Most shows are 21+ with ID strictly checked; all-ages events occur periodically and the policy is listed per event. Cover charges range from $15 to $50 USD depending on the artist, with advance ticket purchase strongly recommended for popular shows as the 1,500-capacity room sells out regularly.

McMenamins operates a full bar inside the main ballroom serving Oregon craft beers, cocktails, and wine. No bottle service is offered and bar service follows standard concert-venue format. The Lola's Room on the second floor provides a smaller, adjacent live music space with parallel programming on select evenings. Ringlers Pub and Annex on the ground floor serve a full McMenamins food menu before and after shows. Dress code is entirely casual; no formal attire is expected or enforced, and the crowd reflects Portland's characteristically relaxed aesthetic across a broad age range.
