Kentucky State Capitol

The Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort is a Beaux-Arts limestone edifice completed in 1910 and regarded as one of the most architecturally distinguished state capitols in the United States. Designed by the firm of Frank Mills Andrews, the building's 212-foot copper dome dominates the skyline of Frankfort's south hill and drew design inspiration from the United States Capitol and the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris. The exterior features 70 Ionic columns arrayed across the north and south facades, monumental bronze entrance doors, and a terrace overlooking panoramic views of the Kentucky River valley and surrounding hills. Interior highlights include the rotunda floor inlaid with 30 varieties of marble imported from Europe and the Americas, the Governor's Reception Room with its ornate plasterwork ceiling and Flemish-style murals, and original brass legislative chamber fixtures preserved from the 1910 construction. The House of Representatives chamber and the Senate chamber — both accessible on free guided tours when not in session — retain the carved wood detailing, painted ceilings, and period ironwork of the original design. On the northeast lawn, a 65-foot Floral Clock sits in a circular garden bed planted with more than 20,000 seasonal flowers maintained by state horticulturalists and replanted twice annually to reflect the Kentucky growing seasons. Statues on the surrounding grounds include Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ephraim McDowell (pioneer of abdominal surgery), and Dr. Ephraim McDowell. Free guided tours depart from the rotunda on a scheduled basis on weekdays and on weekends at 10:00 AM, noon, and 2:00 PM, covering the rotunda, legislative chambers (when available), and the Governor's official portrait gallery. The Kentucky State Capitol is approximately 50 miles from both Louisville and Lexington.
