Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace Distillery, situated on the south bank of the Kentucky River in Frankfort, Kentucky, is one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States, with documented distilling activity on the site dating to 1787. The 130-acre campus in the state capital houses more than 100 buildings — including century-old brick warehouses, limestone-walled rickhouses, and a working cooperage — that collectively chronicle the evolution of American bourbon production from frontier craft to global industry. The distillery remained in operation through Prohibition under a medicinal whiskey license, making it one of the few US distilleries to emerge from that era without a production gap. Buffalo Trace is the flagship bourbon of the campus, but the site also produces Blanton's (the first commercially bottled single-barrel bourbon, introduced in 1984), Eagle Rare, W.L. Weller, E.H. Taylor Jr., and the cult-collectible Pappy Van Winkle family of aged wheated bourbons. Free guided Trace Tours, running 45 to 60 minutes, lead visitors through the grain storage facility, mash cookers, fermentation tanks, copper column stills, barrel filling station, and at least one of the massive limestone rickhouses where hundreds of thousands of barrels age under seasonal temperature fluctuations that drive bourbon in and out of the charred oak. The complementary tasting at the tour's end includes Buffalo Trace bourbon and Bourbon Cream. Premium paid experiences — the Antique Collection Tour and the O.F.C. Tour — provide access to limited production areas and allocated sample pours not included in the free tour. The gift shop carries exclusive distillery-only bottlings and branded merchandise, though the most sought-after allocated bottles including Pappy Van Winkle are rarely available for direct purchase.
