Lexington Old Courthouse & Cheapside Park

Cheapside Park and the Fayette County Old Courthouse sit at the historic civic and commercial heart of downtown Lexington, Kentucky, at the intersection of Short Street and Cheapside Street, one block from Main Street. The courthouse, a Classical Revival structure built in 1898 with a limestone facade, columned portico, and copper-capped dome, anchors the northern edge of the compact urban park. The name Cheapside derives from an outdoor slave market that operated in the public space in front of the courthouse through the antebellum period, making this one of the most historically significant and sobering locations in central Kentucky. Since 2018, formal interpretive signage and a memorial installation in the park explicitly acknowledge the site's history as a place where enslaved people were sold at public auction, often separating families. The park itself is approximately one acre of urban greenspace rimmed by late 19th and early 20th-century commercial buildings that form a well-preserved historic streetscape. Free lunchtime concerts, a seasonal farmers' market, and cultural festivals animate the space from spring through fall, and the park serves as a gathering point for many of Lexington's guided historical walking tours. The surrounding Courthouse Square is framed by law firms, cafes, and restaurants occupying buildings with significant architectural heritage. Outdoor historical marker plaques on the perimeter detail Cheapside's role in antebellum commerce and Lexington's position as a regional center during the pre-Civil War period. Visitors typically spend 30 to 60 minutes in and around the park and courthouse exterior; those joining a guided walking tour through the adjacent historic district should allow 90 minutes to two hours.
