Talcott Mountain — Heublein Tower Trail

The Heublein Tower Trail at Talcott Mountain State Park in Simsbury, Connecticut, leads 1.25 miles through deciduous woodland to a historic stone tower on the 1,007-foot summit of Talcott Mountain in the Farmington River valley. The trailhead is located off Route 185 with free parking; no permit is required. The Main Trail climbs approximately 320 feet on a well-graded path of packed dirt and crushed stone in its lower sections, transitioning to exposed traprock ledge near the summit. Shade is consistent through the forested lower portion but limited on the final ridge approach. At the summit stands the Heublein Tower, a four-story structure built in 1914 as a private retreat by Hartford businessman Gilbert Heublein and later donated to Connecticut. When open for guided tours — typically Fridays through Sundays from late May through early September and on select fall weekends — the tower provides panoramic views extending to Long Island Sound and the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, with portions of New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont visible on exceptional days. The round trip of 2.5 miles is achievable for most hikers in 1.5 to 2.5 hours. No water sources exist on route; carrying a full water bottle is advisable. The trail is part of the Metacomet Trail system and connects south along the traprock ridge to Penwood State Park for those wishing a longer outing of up to 8 miles. Talcott Mountain State Park sits roughly 12 miles west of Hartford, making it a convenient half-day excursion from the greater Hartford–Springfield corridor. Deer ticks are present in the scrubby understory from April through November.
