Penwood State Park Ridge Trail

Penwood State Park in Bloomfield, Connecticut, preserves a section of the Metacomet Ridge traprock escarpment 15 minutes west of Hartford, offering a 5.5-mile loop through oak and hickory forest with sustained Connecticut River Valley views from the 830-foot ridge. The primary trailhead and parking area are at 57 Gun Mill Road; parking is free and no permit is required. The loop combines the Metacomet Trail with internal park paths, climbing through second-growth woodland on a mix of packed dirt and exposed traprock ledge. Several open viewpoints along the ridge overlook the Farmington River valley to the north and the Connecticut River lowlands to the east, with the Hartford skyline occasionally visible through gaps in the canopy. Total elevation gain is approximately 300 to 400 feet over rolling ridgeline terrain that rises and dips between 700 and 830 feet elevation, making the overall ascent less concentrated than many Connecticut ridge hikes. The traprock surface is stable in dry conditions but becomes slippery when wet or frost-covered; sturdy trail shoes are recommended year-round. No water sources are available on the loop; carrying at least 1.5 liters is advisable. Penwood State Park is named for a former private estate whose woodland was donated to Connecticut in 1944; remnants of ornamental planting from the estate era are visible along the lower approach trail in spring. The park shares a southern boundary with Talcott Mountain State Park, and a connecting section of the Metacomet Trail allows hikers to link both parks for a longer ridge walk of 8 or more miles ending at the Heublein Tower. Deer ticks are active from April through November in the brushy understory below the ridge.
