Formosa Cafe

Formosa Cafe at 7156 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood is one of the surviving institutions of old Hollywood nightlife, operating in various forms since 1925. The original structure incorporated a repurposed Red Car trolley carriage, and the bar expanded over the decades into the surrounding building. During Hollywood's golden age, the Formosa was the after-work bar for stars working at nearby Warner Bros., RKO, and Samuel Goldwyn studios. Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Humphrey Bogart were among the regulars. The walls remain covered with their black-and-white photographs alongside decades of Hollywood memorabilia.

The interior was meticulously restored in 2018 following a period of closure. The restoration preserved the original red vinyl booths, neon signage, and vintage Hollywood atmosphere while upgrading the cocktail program and kitchen. The bar menu now includes elevated versions of mid-century classics alongside original house drinks, all priced approximately $16–18. The bar team takes the cocktail program seriously, which distinguishes the Formosa from purely nostalgia-themed competitors on the same street.

West Hollywood's entertainment industry geography gives the Formosa a crowd that mixes local film and television workers with tourists and cocktail enthusiasts drawn by the genuine history. The atmosphere skews toward the 30s–50s age range on weeknights; weekends bring a broader demographic mix. Dress is smart casual in the Hollywood style — polished but not formal. No dress code is enforced.

Formosa Cafe is open Monday through Friday from 4pm to 2am and Saturday through Sunday from noon to 2am, making it an option for weekend afternoon visits. No cover charge applies. The kitchen serves a California-Asian fusion menu throughout operating hours. Weekend evenings can draw a wait for booth seating; the bar itself typically has space at most times.
