Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium sits on the southern end of historic Cannery Row in Monterey, California, built in 1984 on the site of the former Hovden Sardine Cannery. It is consistently ranked among the top aquariums in the world and is credited with pioneering the display of living kelp forest ecosystems as a public institution. The aquarium's building retains structural elements of the original cannery, and Monterey Bay is directly visible through windows and exterior terraces throughout. The Open Sea exhibit in the Outer Bay gallery is the centerpiece — a massive acrylic-walled tank containing 1.2 million gallons of water housing bluefin tuna, ocean sunfish, sea turtles, and hammerhead sharks. The Kelp Forest exhibit rises 28 feet through two floors of the historic building and is tended daily by scuba divers who remove debris and hand-feed the residents; feeding presentations occur twice daily and draw substantial crowds around the tank. The Sandy Shore and Splash Zone galleries are oriented toward younger visitors, with supervised touch pools where horseshoe crabs, bat rays, sea stars, and sea anemones can be handled with guidance from aquarium educators. The Sea Otter program maintains a group of rescued animals that cannot be returned to the wild, and the Otter 501 exhibit tells the story of a pup raised from infancy by aquarium staff — among the most emotionally resonant displays in the building. The Mysteries of the Deep wing houses bioluminescent jellyfish exhibits and deep-sea organisms rarely displayed publicly. A comprehensive visit through all galleries, including Open Sea presentations and at least one Kelp Forest feeding show, takes three to five hours. Outside the building, direct observation of sea otters and harbor seals on the bay rocks from the exterior coastal deck is common at any time of day. Cannery Row immediately outside the entrance offers dining and historical context about the sardine industry that shaped Monterey through the mid-20th century.
