Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island sits 1.5 miles off the San Francisco waterfront in San Francisco Bay, California, and operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 before becoming part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The island's inmate population rarely exceeded 260 at any given time, yet it held some of the era's most notorious criminals, including Al Capone, George 'Machine Gun' Kelly, and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. Ferries depart from Pier 33 on the Embarcadero and cross to the island in approximately 15 minutes, docking at the base of a steep pathway leading to the main cell house. The audio tour, narrated by former guards and inmates, runs approximately 45 minutes and guides visitors through the cell blocks row by row. Broadway — the main corridor between B and C blocks — retains the institutional smell and scale of the original facility. The D Block isolation cells are a tour highlight, including a recreation of the sensory-deprivation conditions of the disciplinary segregation unit. The 1962 escape by Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, the only breakout considered a possible success, is covered in a dedicated exhibit near the warden's office. Beyond the cell house, the island offers panoramic views of San Francisco, the Marin Headlands, and the Bay Bridge from the recreation yard. The ruins of the original 19th-century military fortification and the historic lighthouse — the oldest on the West Coast — sit at the island's summit. The gardens maintained by inmates and now tended by volunteers add unexpected color to the bare concrete landscape. A typical island visit runs three to four hours. The evening tour adds atmospheric low-light conditions and a separate narration track with a more dramatic tone. Tickets sell out days or weeks ahead on busy weekends.
